The Avengers: Spoiler Free Review

Summer is officially upon us, how do we know that you ask? The change of the weather? The date on the calendar? Sure these are the traditional ways of knowing the changes of the season but I prefer to think that summer starts when the first big blockbuster movie drops and reminds me why I still venture out of my home to see movies instead of just waiting for the blu-ray.  Enter The Avengers.  I'm just going to say it will be really hard for me to talk about this movie without talking about individual scenes, I don't want to spoil anything, but I'm going to give it a shot.  First off this movie is amazing, in fact amazing is an understatement. This movie is so good I don't even know what exactly to call it but it knocks it out of the park.  The internets report that this movie is on track to make about 548,000,000 by the end of its opening weekend and you know what it deserves it and much more.

So where to start, I think with the scope of the movie, strange right.  What I mean by this is that The Avengers takes to the screen amazingly well from a comic book. I can't think of any other movie adapted from a comic book that captured the feeling of a comic book style battle better than this did.  Every scene is huge, larger than life and every scene leaves you excited and wanting more, much more (and no that's not a negative).  Every character is well represented, even the characters that I was not really a fan of going into the movie, like The Hulk or Captain America, I have left with a new found appreciation for.  Joss Whedon does an spectacular job of making all of these characters be hero's that I like yet somehow I can identify with because of their believable personalities.  There is a great deal of humor throughout the movie too, the action doesn't need to be broken up but the jokes that are sprinkled in work and are always delivered well.  The Avengers is truly a masterpiece and should be viewed as not only a blockbuster but a true cinematic achievement that any one who likes movies owes to themselves to see in a theater on the big screen, yes this is a day 1 blu-ray purchase type of film but The Avengers is the type of movie that the silver screen is made for.  Go see it in the theater, twice even, because big movies this well done and this fun don't come out all to often.

Lastly I want to nominate Joss Whedon right now for best director this year.  This movies cast of characters alone would be no small feat to manage, but to pull it off practically flawlessly and make a movie with a run time of 142 minuets seem short is a work of true genius.  Not only is every single shot in this movie beautiful but I can finally say I left the theater with an absolute sense of what a movie adapted from a comic book should be.  Huge battles, campy but fun dialogue, ass kicking from start to finish, and most importantly more love for the character than when I went into the theater.  I was a fan of Whedon before this movie came out after seeing The Avengers I think the man's brilliance has no limit and he should truly be received as one of our great directors currently working.

Wolverine and Freddie Mercury?

I guess the idea of a comic where Wolverine meets Freedie Mercury was actually pitched not all that long ago. I would have bought this, I don't see enough random strange crossovers of mutants and dead gay 80's singers.

Game of Thrones Drinking Game

The best thing is this game is to take a drink everytime that Joffery acts like a douchbag, which of course is every time he is on screen.  Game of Thrones is the kind of show that would pair well with booze to begin with so this just adds a different level of fun, if you open the image below in its own tab it should give you a much larger view of the game of drink that is easier to read and what not.  Download, save, enjoy! Cheers!
