The Five Year Engagement Review

So it's Saturday night and you know what that means right? That's right.. Ladies night! Ok I guess not really but it turned into date night for me, which is great.  What was our movie of choice? As I'm sure you have guessed from the poster and title of this post we went and checked out the newest offering from Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, The Five Year Engagement.   This was completely and 100% a wise decision.  So where to start with this review, I suppose the cast is as good a place as any. We shall start with Emily Blunt; I can't honestly say that before tonight I was a big fan of hers, I had seen a few of her movies but she had never really stood out for me. In this she shines, not only is she absolutely adorable but she is for the most part sweet, likable, and has an irresistible British accent which is so charming you can't help but want to hug her.  Then we have Jason Segel, possibly the most consistently funny lead man in Hollywood right now.  The guy can't seem to miss and it seems that every character he plays I find entirely too many ways to relate to.  The Five Year Engagement is no exception, he is so at the top of this game in this movie that he takes the role to the point where no other actor could have played the role (and isn't that what a great actor should do?)  He seems to carry a movie in a way that is effortless in the best way possible and is enjoyable as always to watch.

The story is what the trailer makes it to be, no big plot twists or brain teasers her. Tom and Violet are in love, get engaged and then life postpones their wedding repeatedly for about 5 years.  I don't think you go into this movie look for the Christopher Nolan type of brain rattling plot so don't take the lack of major plot surprises as a negative.  The story is so well written that the humor keeps you in the movie regardless.  You actually find yourself getting bummed when the next hurdle gets thrown at these two love birds pushing back their indoctrination day but the writing and the delivery from the actors keeps you from dwelling on whatever negativity is in the movie.  I wrote a review way back when about another film of Segel's, I Love You Man, where I made the statement that it is a perfect date movie because you are watching a romantic comedy, but the comedy is so ridiculously funny that even the most manly of the manly men should find themselves laughing from start to finish during this movie.

I would also like to point out Brian Posehn's performance in The Five Year Engagement.  Posehn is, in my opinion, one of the funniest comedians out there today.  Bottom line is you do not see him in enough movies, to my extreme pleasure I couldn't have been more thrilled when he appeared on the screen in front of me.  Sure he has a relatively small role in the movie but he makes his screen time count, he is totally memorable and I left the theater thinking about the movie and being most pleased by some of his bits (especially his gagging scene).  Posehn has been around for some time now, I hope that this movie can do for him what movies like Knocked Up and 40 Year Old Vrigin did for Jonnah Hill.

eBooks vs. Books
by Doppelganger

Although it sounded nice, I was originally against the idea of eBooks. An entire book, multiple books on one device, readable anytime, anywhere at the tip of my fingers? It sounds pretty awesome at face value. What I didn't like is the implications eBooks would have on the industry I have grown to love. Since eBooks began, we have seen many good things, many new up-start authors getting a voice and a place to sell their books, varying prices and strong availability. But these things have come at a big cost. Borders went out of business, for more than one reason, but primarily because they didn't embrace the eBook generation that was on the up-rise. Used book stores, while still around in force, are slowly closing up because they aren't able to generate income and don't have electronic books. On the flip side, libraries have taken a part in eBooks because it seems to be the way of the future. I don't think anyone wants to see their public libraries close and I was glad to see they continue to do their thing, while embracing the new technology. I never thought I would own a Kindle or a Nook, but I received one as a gift, like it and can definitely see its value. I think of it as a great way to supplement books but not a way to replace them. To me, there is something about a book in your hand, the artwork on the cover, the turning of a page and the completion of a physical book that an eBook will never be able to replicate. Give me 1000 books on a device and shower me with ads, good values and options, but at the end of the day I would rather hold a good book in my hands, know what actual page I am on, finish it and return it to my bookshelf. Some today would say that is old fashioned, but I think its literature.

Haven't Seen Skelator In A While

Well good. its 2012, Skelator got  a sex change has boobs and is checking out conventions.  America FTW!

Release The Kraken

This makes me want rum.  I'm not even a big fan of rum but I would release this all over my brain.

Ah yes VHS that format that came before we started burning movies onto a disk! Magnetic tape goodness that started to wear out after about 5 viewings.  For a nerd like me VHS was probably not the best format because I will rewatch movies over and over again.  Still this brings me back and is pretty damn cool.  I wouldn't have put Footloose and Rambo on the same tape but to each is own.

Some Venture Brothers Cosplay

The Venture Brothers don't get enough love. This is a good start.

What Do You Mean Only 1,050 Pieces of Bacon!?!

Quite possibly the most delicious looking heart attack ever this burger (yes theres a burger in there somewhere) has 1,050 pieces of Bacon on it.  What I can't figure out, aside from how the guy who ate it is still alive, is why 1,050 pieces? why not 1,000 or 1,100?  Regardless, my heart is asking me to stop looking at this thing now before I die from cardiac arrest.

Darth Invader?

I don't know what is more impressive here, the fact that a Darth Vader Dildo exists, or the fact that it's only 12.99!

If ever there were to be a pair of shoes that I could justify spending $250 bucks on this would be them.  Sad thing is I wouldn't even wear them, I would put them in some sort of display case for all to behold, why because they are amazing!!  (Product Page)

An Art Exhibit Born In Blood

I don't even know what to say about this but wow.  This artist, Jordan Eagles, has an entire art exhibit with all the work made from blood.  Its chiling and amazing at the same time, somehow I get the feeling that this is what Dexter myst see when he does his work because as dark and weird as this is I'm looking through the pictures and it's all strangely, very intriguing. Check it out here.

Super Trooper!

This Might Be Taking The Joke To Far

Hell no I'm not taking the joke to far! I'm always going to remember Skyrim and the arrow to the knee joke because I had ink injected under my skin to make sure that happens. Yeah, good call.

Black Widow Cosplay

Nice! This is a win for sure and just in time for the avengers movie!

Do it until you learn!

I'm very amused by the idea of Vader scolding StormTroopers with a light saber.

Lizard Man 2012

So this is the new Lizard Man. Marvel doesn't do a lot to keep my faith with them, at least not when it comes to movies based off their comics.  I don't know that it would have been better to make Lizard look like bellow but I don't think the choice of making him look like a green version of The Thing.  My hopes are low with this incarnation of Spiderman.
