With the PSVita coming out there's a lot of talk about handheld gaming going around again, and rightfully so. The Vita looks to be a strong system that might open a lot of doors to what can be done in the gaming industry. Sadly there really isn't anything Sony will be able to pitch me to sway me into buying that system. Why? I like games and I like new shiny gadgets, so why not get this new toy? The reason is the same as why I sold every handheld console I've ever had in the past, they're simply to big and expensive to take everywhere with me so really all I end up buying is the new PSPaperweight. Enter the smartphone. In terms of the big 3 gaming companies this is where Microsoft got it right, surprisingly. Let's integrate our online gaming community with practical mobile devices, smartphones, something that practically never leaves your side. The only real problem is Microsoft has not convinced me to trust them enough to want one of their phones for 2 years in contract with whoever but thats a whole different story. The other point that Sony is missing, at least in my opinion, is that I don't want to play ganes like Uncharted on the go, epic games are meant to be an experience, a fusion of interactive storytelling and cinematic events. Mobile games are supposed to be simple and entertain me at my desk listening to people who don't know how to work their own tv. In the end it's certainly cool to see technology evolving like this in front of our eyes; however I really think Sony needs to take a step back and reconsider what mobile gaming really is before trying to convince me that I need another $250 3g wifi enabled dust collector gathering dust in my home.
